Maoist violence, poverty mar growth in decade-old Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Nov 17 (IANS) In 10 years of existence, Chhattisgarh has become a study in contrasts. While the state recorded a high growth rate at 11.49 percent, people contest claims of development by citing the fast spreading Maoist insurgency, lack of healthcare and poverty.

A state of 20.08 million people today, Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh Nov 1, 2000, to bring prosperity to the neglected region, particularly the tribals.

Maoists release Chhattisgarh cops, keep weapons

Raipur, Nov 20 (IANS) Two Chhattisgarh policemen, abducted by Maoists Nov 8, have been safely released, police said Saturday. The rebels, however, kept the two policemen's weapons and ammunition.

'Maoists have released both the cops - Khemchand Sahu and Jitendra Patel - unharmed,' Inspector General of Police (Bastar) T.J. Longkumer told IANS. He, however, refused to comment whether police conceded the demands of the Maoists.

11 Naxals arrested in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Nov 19, (PTI) Eleven Naxals were arrested from different places in Chhattisgarh''s Bijapur district today, police said.
Bijapur SP B P S Rajbhanu said five Naxals were held in Gangalur and three each from areas falling under Bhairamgarh and Bijapur police.
He said police teams were sent today from the three police stations for patrolling. The team that reached Potampara village found movements of five villagers suspicious. Later, they were arrested as during interrogation it was realised that they were Naxals and many cases of arson and dacoity were registered against them.

Two Naxals arrested in Dantewada

Raipur, Nov 18 (PTI) Two Naxals, including a woman carrying a reward of Rs one lakh on her head, were arrested in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district today, police said. Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Madkami Hunge alias Shanni, who was carrying a bounty of Rs one lakh, and Madkami Arjun, Sautnaur village under Tongpal station area, Dantewada SP SRP Kalluri told PTI over phone. Shanni, a member of the Darbha division's military company, was in Arjun's house in Sautnaur since the past one month for getting treatment, he said.

Two women among three Maoists held in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Nov 18 (IANS) Chhattisgarh Police Thursday arrested three Maoists, including two women insurgents, from a forested pocket of violence-hit Dantewada district.

'The arrested Maoists had been actively involved in several attacks in Dantewada and Bijapur districts of restive Bastar region and police were looking for them for the past three years,' said S.R.P. Kalluri, Dantewada's district superintendent of police.

Chhattisgarh Police arrests two Maoists in Dantewada

Chhattisgarh Police took into its custody two suspected Maoists with arms and ammunitions here on Thursday.

Dantewada Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) SRP Kaluri said the police had prior information about Maoists and their movements that helped them in nabbing the two Maoists in the region.

It has been reported that the police had prior information about the female Maoist cadre being unwell and staying with another Maoist named Arjun.

CRPF personnel worst hit in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, November 17: Chhattisgarh holds the dubious distinction of having witnessed the highest number of killing of CRPF personnel for the last 3 consecutive years among all Naxal-hit states.
Even in 2010, the state topped the list. Of the 126 CRPF personnel killed at the hands of Naxals in 2010, 113 deaths were reported in Chhattisgarh.

Similarly in 2009, of the 58 CRPF personnel killed, 32 were killed in the state.
