Police blame CRPF torture for Naxal death, Sukma

Two days after a suspected Naxal, Pudiyami Mada, reportedly committed suicide at the Sukma police station, the Chhattisgarh police today blamed “severe torture by CRPF”.

According to the Sukma police station diary, Mada was nabbed by a CRPF team “headed by Assistant Commandant, 2nd Battalion, Ashish Kumar on Friday morning” and handed over to the police at around 8:30 am. He hanged himself in the lock-up at around 9:30 pm.

But the police today said the CRPF personnel had nabbed Mada a few days earlier.

“When we got his remand, constables Kisun Kujur and Amjad Khan said Mada told them he was tortured by the CRPF,” claimed head constable K Nagaiya.

He added that the CRPF personnel had poured petrol on Mada’s private parts and set it on fire. Nagaiya, Kujur and Khan are among the four policemen who have been suspended.

“I immediately sent him for a medical test,” said Nagaiya. The medical test, conducted by Dr R P S Painkra, found abrasions and “swelling over the penis and lateral part of anus”. The report says the wounds were inflicted “90 to 100 hours” before the medical test, which was conducted at 6:30 pm on Friday. Nagaiya said Mada pleaded with the policemen to shoot him. “None of the suspended policemen is responsible. It seems they nabbed him a few days before they handed him over to us,” Nagaiya added. Another police officer pointed that the 12 bore rifle was not recovered from Mada as claimed by the central force.
