STORY: Shankari, reported to be the oldest tigress in the world is ailing at Raipur in India's central Chhattisgarh.

The tigress was found in an unconscious state on Monday (November 15) in its enclosure at Nandan Van Zoo.

The 23-year-old tigress, has been ailing for the last couple of months due to old age.

However, the veterinarians at the zoo have been tending the sick feline Shankari with outmost care.

Dr. Jaikishore Jadiya, a veterinarian said the major problem of tigress has been its old age and now after the treatment, it is in better condition now.

"The biggest problem of a tigress is her (its) old age. In old age, weakness problem is usually there and because of that she (it) lied down and then treatment has been given to her (it) because of which she (it) has now recovered a bit and is in a better condition now, yesterday she (it) was badly ill," said Jaikishore Jadiya, a veterinarian.

Even the visitors the zoo shared their anxiety over the health of the tigress.

"I felt very bad after looking its condition and felt very sad that the tigress is ill in the Nandan forest and it is now in the last stage," said Rama Rao, a visitor.

According to the zoo authorities, Shankari is struggling as it had developed several critical complications because of old age.

The tigress Shankari was rescued by the forest guards from a poacher's cage with her one hand injured and was rescued on January 14, 1994 and at that time it was believed to be around seven years in age.

The Conservator of Forests, Chhattisgarh has endeavoured to endorse the name of Shankari as the oldest tigress in the world in the annals of the Guinness Book of World Records.
