About 50,000 workers employed with 175 mini steel plants in Chhattisgarh face a threat to their jobs as the factory owners have announced closure of their units amid rising prices of sponge iron used as raw material.
"The per tonne price of sponge iron has shot up from Rs. 14,000-15,000 to Rs. 18,000 and it is not even available as per our needs...we have no option but to start closing the units from December 1," Ashok Surana, president of the Chhattisgarh Mini Steel Plants Association, said.

Chhattisgarh to host international meet on rare disease

Raipur, Nov 19 (IANS) Over 200 experts from across the world will meet here to discuss rising cases of 'sickle-cell' blood disorder that has affected roughly 15-18 percent of Chhattisgarh's population.

The six-day convention will begin Nov 22, an official said Friday. The Chhattisgarh government has organised it in association with the Sickle Cell Disease International Organisation.

'The basic intent is to draw attention to sickle cell disease as a rising public health problem in India,' said P.K. Patra, head of the Centre for Genetic Diseases and Molecular Biology.

Chhattisgarh tightlipped over security forces vacating schools

Raipur, Nov 19 (IANS) A day after the apex court asked the state government to remove security forces from schools, Chhattisgarh Friday chose to remain tightlipped about when it will begin the process.

'It's a very complex issue and I can't comment on it... vacating these schools needs a lot of thought,' a senior official at the police headquarters who co-ordinates anti-Maoist operation in the state, told IANS.

11 Naxals arrested in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Nov 19, (PTI) Eleven Naxals were arrested from different places in Chhattisgarh''s Bijapur district today, police said.
Bijapur SP B P S Rajbhanu said five Naxals were held in Gangalur and three each from areas falling under Bhairamgarh and Bijapur police.
He said police teams were sent today from the three police stations for patrolling. The team that reached Potampara village found movements of five villagers suspicious. Later, they were arrested as during interrogation it was realised that they were Naxals and many cases of arson and dacoity were registered against them.

Two Naxals arrested in Dantewada

Raipur, Nov 18 (PTI) Two Naxals, including a woman carrying a reward of Rs one lakh on her head, were arrested in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district today, police said. Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Madkami Hunge alias Shanni, who was carrying a bounty of Rs one lakh, and Madkami Arjun, Sautnaur village under Tongpal station area, Dantewada SP SRP Kalluri told PTI over phone. Shanni, a member of the Darbha division's military company, was in Arjun's house in Sautnaur since the past one month for getting treatment, he said.

Two women among three Maoists held in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Nov 18 (IANS) Chhattisgarh Police Thursday arrested three Maoists, including two women insurgents, from a forested pocket of violence-hit Dantewada district.

'The arrested Maoists had been actively involved in several attacks in Dantewada and Bijapur districts of restive Bastar region and police were looking for them for the past three years,' said S.R.P. Kalluri, Dantewada's district superintendent of police.

Centre agrees to high-level monitoring panel in Chhattisgarh case

With the petitioners in the ongoing PIL case on Salwa Judum asking for the formation of a high-level committee to oversee the rehabilitation of displaced persons in Chhattisgarh and deal with criminal matters arising from the activities of the state-sponsored anti-naxal movement, the Centre, through the Solicitor-General, on Thursday told the Supreme Court that it agreed to the setting up of a panel but needed time to work out the details.

Slow paddy procurement in Chhattisgarh

Paddy arrival in the societies set up by the state government to procure the yield at minimum support price (MSP) is yet to take pace in Chhattisgarh.

Procurement of paddy at MSP started across the state from November 1 and will continue till January 31, 2011. The state marketing federation has set up 1587 procurement centres under 1333 primary cooperative societies.
