Nov. 19: A suspected Abhinav Bharat ideologue from Hooghly who floated a front to reverse alleged conversion by Christian missionaries in Gujarat and had Narendra Modi at one of his events has been arrested over the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast in Hyderabad.

Jatin Chatterjee, a native of Kamarpukur in the Bengal district with a Master’s degree in science from Burdwan University, is known as Swami Asimanand among his followers.

Chhattisgarh zoo closed to mourn death of tigress

Raipur, Nov 19 (IANS) A zoo in Chhattisgarh was closed Friday to mourn the death of one of the world's oldest tigresses.

The tigress died Thursday at the age of a little over 22 years and 10 months at the government-run Nandan Van zoo that is based on the outskirts of state capital Raipur.

'Shankari was ailing for a few days and had enjoyed a lot of affection of visitors and even residents of nearby villagers,' Rakesh Chaturvedi, conservator of forests (wildlife), told IANS.

Chhattisgarh to host international meet on rare disease

Raipur, Nov 19 (IANS) Over 200 experts from across the world will meet here to discuss rising cases of 'sickle-cell' blood disorder that has affected roughly 15-18 percent of Chhattisgarh's population.

The six-day convention will begin Nov 22, an official said Friday. The Chhattisgarh government has organised it in association with the Sickle Cell Disease International Organisation.

'The basic intent is to draw attention to sickle cell disease as a rising public health problem in India,' said P.K. Patra, head of the Centre for Genetic Diseases and Molecular Biology.

Chhattisgarh tightlipped over security forces vacating schools

Raipur, Nov 19 (IANS) A day after the apex court asked the state government to remove security forces from schools, Chhattisgarh Friday chose to remain tightlipped about when it will begin the process.

'It's a very complex issue and I can't comment on it... vacating these schools needs a lot of thought,' a senior official at the police headquarters who co-ordinates anti-Maoist operation in the state, told IANS.

Raipur, Nov 17 (IANS) In 10 years of existence, Chhattisgarh has become a study in contrasts. While the state recorded a high growth rate at 11.49 percent, people contest claims of development by citing the fast spreading Maoist insurgency, lack of healthcare and poverty.

A state of 20.08 million people today, Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh Nov 1, 2000, to bring prosperity to the neglected region, particularly the tribals.

Maoists release Chhattisgarh cops, keep weapons

Raipur, Nov 20 (IANS) Two Chhattisgarh policemen, abducted by Maoists Nov 8, have been safely released, police said Saturday. The rebels, however, kept the two policemen's weapons and ammunition.

'Maoists have released both the cops - Khemchand Sahu and Jitendra Patel - unharmed,' Inspector General of Police (Bastar) T.J. Longkumer told IANS. He, however, refused to comment whether police conceded the demands of the Maoists.
