In Raipur, calls to disband Home Minister’s pvt police squad

A special team of the Chhattisgarh Police that reports directly to state Home Minister Nankiram Kanwar may be wound up ahead of the winter session of the Assembly following a series of controversies involving its men.

Kanwar’s own party legislators have accused the team — it is being called the “HM squad” because it reports to the Home Minister and not senior police officers — of indulging in “extortion” and framing people in cases of bootlegging and gambling.

Both ruling party legislators and the opposition Congress are questioning the legality of existence of a special police squad that reports directly to the Home Minister.

Principal Secretary (Home) N K Oswal says he doesn’t know how the “special squad constituted by the DGP” got the tag of HM squad. “As far its dissolution or winding up is concerned, it is for the Home Minister to decide,” Oswal told The Indian Express, refusing to elaborate on the controversies surrounding the team.
