Maoists blast three bridges in Chhattisgarh

Maoist guerrillas blew up three bridges in Chhattisgarh's restive Bastar region on Thursday, police said. The rebels blew up the bridges in Kirandul area in Dantewada district, some 400 km from state capital Raipur. "Two of the bridges were under construction while the third one had been recently

constructed. The rebels placed explosives under the bridges and triggered the blast," an official at police headquarters in Raipur said.

Dr Binayak Sen found guilty of treason, sentenced to life term

Raipur: Renowned civil rights activist, -58-year-old, Dr Binayak Sen has been found guilty of sedition for helping Maoists and has been sentenced to life term.

A Raipur court in Chhattisgarh has found him guilty of waging war against India.

''He has been found guilty under Section 124 and also under Chhattisgarh Jan Suraksha Act. We will appeal against it, '' said Hashim Khan, Binayak Sen's lawyer.

Tribal students benefit from Chhattisgarh Govt.'s 'Hostel Scheme'

Raipur, Dec 20: In its endeavor to promote literacy in the State, particularly tribal children, the Chhattisgarh Government has launched a 'Hostel Scheme' in several interior villages.
The literacy rate is comparatively quite low in several villages of the State.

Education is imparted from Class 1 to 8 under this scheme, and the Government has set up around 110 hostels in Mahasamund District, where more than 5,000 students are presently enrolled.

Jumbos give Chhattisgarh villagers sleepless nights

Raipur, Dec 20 (IANS) Over 65 families in a forested locality of Chhattisgarh are spending sleepless nights as a herd of wild elephants has been roaming in the area and has already damaged seven houses, forest officials said Monday.

'Some 50 tribal families of Ketka area in Surguja district have been spending sleepless nights and they fear for life as a herd of 11 wild elephants has been making an entry into their village every night since Friday,' a senior official here at forest headquarters told IANS.

Journalist shot dead in Bilaspur

RAIPUR: Unidentified assailants shot dead Sushil Pathak, a journalist, after midnight at Bilaspur city in Chhattisgarh. Police said the incident took place when Pathak, working with Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar, was returning home after a late night shift and the assailants fired four bullets from close range, killing him on the spot. Another journalist saw Pathak and informed the police.

Chhattisgarh gunfight over, no casualties

Raipur, Dec 18 (IANS) The gunfight between the heavily-armed Maoists and police that broke out late Saturday evening in Bijapur district of the state's restive Bastar region ended about an hour later with no casualty to either side, police said.

The exchange of fire between the rebels and police erupted in a thickly forested and hilly area of Bijapur, some 420 km south of capital Raipur.

Raipur, Dec 19 (ANI): Taking note of the fact that malnutrition claims the lives of several innocent children and mothers every year, the Chhattisgarh Government has initiated a 'Ready to Eat Food' scheme, which provides proper nourishment to the needy.

Besides providing better nourishment, the scheme also provides employment to a large number of people in the State.

The 'Self-Assistance Centers' in the State manufacture the 'Ready to Eat Food'. This scheme, which is operated by the Women Child Development Department, also provides employment to women.
